LURVE magazine friends reflect on the most exciting moments in 2011.

One of my most memorable moments was when I spent the Royal Wedding Bank holiday weekend in April at the beautiful Somerset home of Alice Temperley! We got there early so we could watch the royal wedding in the comfort of the gorgeous, English countryside and oohed and ahhed over Kate’s dress! Alice kept it all very quiet that she had in fact designed Pippa Middleton’s reception dress (the infamous emerald green one, a bespoke dress inspired by a similar dress from her SS11 collection) until we saw pictures on the news of Pippa looking fabulous in it! So it was nice to have a little connection to the Royal Wedding!
Other moments for me was in March, seeing the YSL FW11 collection and feeling like I wanted everything and also Chloe SS12 show with their new creative director.

I loved Zac Posen Spring Summer collection shown in NYC. It was so lovely to see so many beautiful evening dresses. As for art, I have to say the most notable and sad happening was the passing of Cy Twombly. Such a talent.

The resplendent carousel at the Louis Vuitton show: I heard there was an audible gasp heard throughout the setting at the near ethereal beauty of it all. It was just a moment that really spoke to why I love fashion: it’s a craft. People create beautiful, beautiful things that can’t be dismissed.
Shala Monroque as one of NET-A-PORTER’s, “Faces of Fashion”: That just made my year as a woman of color working in fashion—and also for one who in fact worked at NET-A-PORTER. It just spoke to an epoch that’s happening, one where there is much more fluidity to this idea of “influence.” It can come from anyone, anywhere.
“Pushing Boundaries of Black Style”, the New York TImes article on Street Etiquette: It was a pivotal moment where the underground, a subversive subculture met the mainstream. It shown how far one’s reach can go. Josh and Travis have all taken it in stride, and have never wavered from their mission of reimagining Black masculinity.
Carine Roitfeld styling for Barney’s: She left her position at Paris Vogue under questionable terms, but really took the opportunity to be as creative as she wished. She wasn’t upset with upsetting people. It was very inspirational.
The appointment of Olivier Rousteing for Balmain: Such a great opportunity for a young designer, although intimidating. But Olivier really breathed new life into the sexy, edgy vibe of the reconfigured brand. There was also a really understated elegance to everything he did, and his newly launched diffusion line was just a great business strategy. It gives you hope!
Miu Miu glitter booties: These were the shoes of the year, and they really reemphasized Ms. Prada’s sway. They were full of such joy and life, kind of an optimism in fashion. I couldn’t help but smiling when I saw them.
I loved when art and fashion intersected, so I was naturally drawn to the Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier retrospectives. I also adored China Chow’s wardrobe on the dubious Bravo show, Work of Art. Her attire was art, itself.

I would have to say that the two most memorable fashion moments for me were first, the EPIC Versace for H&M launch event, featuring a flawless runway presentation followed by two of my favorite performers alive today, Nicki Minaj & Prince. Secondly, was the after-party for the Alexander Wang SS 2012 show, in which Alex and Love magazine transformed the massive Pier 40 into New York’s biggest Fraternity party. Two nights will never forget!

The best fashion moment of 2011 was the debut of the Givenchy dogs and panthers. Throughout all the fashion blogs one could not miss these iconic images associated with urban street culture on the most stylish Individuals.
It was such a hit that rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West took notice and commissioned Riccardo Tisci to design the duos Watch The Throne attire as well as concert graphics.
The biggest art moment of 2011 was the MOCA Galla honoring Marina Abramovic and her controversial performance art piece . Marina used naked models as center pieces adorned with bones displayed like piles of nothing while spectators dinned and mingled amongst the corpses . It caused such controversy that artist Yvonne Rainer wrote an entire open letter furious at Marina for exploiting her subjects .

My most memorable moment of 2011 in fashion was probably the fall of John Galliano.
I am sure it is not very politically correct to mention this but it was a very strange moment.
People felt a bit sad because he was a still is a genius.
Right next on my list is the Terry Richardson and Carine Roitfeld book signing at Colette. Two of my idols and Terry ending up signing my friend breast that day.
Another one was the Marina Abramovic talk at the Tate in London. Inspiring and very emotional.
